Naked Wines introduces a new Portuguese wine

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Rio Real Douro

Rio Real 2009 is a dark, fruity and rich wine, everything a good Douro red should be – it has been created thanks to the Naked Angel funding and is now available to buy online from Naked Wines.

Rio Real 2009 is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz grapes, and last May won a Silver medal at the International Wine Challenge.

It is the first Douro wine from Parras and thanks to the Naked Angel funding it allowed producers to rent a vineyard and a few tanks in a small winery in the Douro valley.

In the UK, all of their wines are exclusive at NakedWines.com.

Niepoort Secundum offer at Fareham Wine Cellar

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Niepoort

Fareham Wine Cellar is offering Wines of Portugal members free delivery and a exclusive 5% discount on a 6 bottle case of Niepoort Secundum Vintage Port – both the 1999 and the 2000 vintage available and the 6 bottles can be mixed.

Dirk Niepoort created this second style of vintage port called “Secundum” with the intention of providing an approachable Vintage Port that offers immediate satisfaction yet is well-balanced enough to age for decades. Both of these vintages are very approachable now and perhaps would mmake a great alternative to drinking your other Vintage Ports too young!

Both Ports were produced from vines that are more than 70 years-old (predominantly Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela and Touriga Nacional). The grapes were foot trodden and the wine was aged in large old oak vats at Niepoort’s lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia prior to release.

Niepoort Secundum 1999 for £32.70
Secundum 1999 was the first vintage produced. For Dirk Niepoort, the Secundum 1999 “Is very impressive, it shows its tannin and also identifies the fruit itself with its concentration and richness. A powerful wine with very good longevity.”

Niepoort Secundum 2000 for £37.19
Another classic Niepoort vintage: combining balance with superb concentration, and at the same time very fine and delicate. The wine also has a splendid rustic character giving it a wonderful individuality.

New wines listed at Peter Watts Wines

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

Peter Watts Wines

Peter Watts Wines have recently introduced several new wines to their portfolio from their long standing supplier, Caves Messias. In particular – two impressive wines from the old walled estate of Quinta do Valdoeiro in Bairrada.

Quinta do Valdoeiro white 2010, Bairrada
A citrus dry white made from local grape varieties Ariento and Bical with a touch of Chardonnay. Light mouth feel with soft minerality. Fresh aftertaste, and exquisite length.

Quinta do Valdoeiro red 2007, Bairrada
The 2007 red is a blend of Syrah; Cabernet Sauvignon; Baga and Touriga Nacional with a year maturing in small oak barriques. Fusing the more traditional grapes with the Portuguese grapes creates a wine with a lot going on but still retaining the identity of the region. Matured in small oak barrels for a 12 month period. It has an intense ruby colour with violet hues. Ripe fruit aromas, complemented by notes of the oak barrel toast.

These two wines are welcome additions to the extensive range of wines and Ports already available from Peter Watts Wines.
